One thing I noticed while researching which product to sell, was that many people were selling these types of MP4 players on eBay® simply calling them MP4 players and not indicating anywhere in the ad that it was not an Apple iPod®

Even though these devices differed in size, weight, screen size, functions, button configurations e.t.c. to some people who are not very familiar with the iPod® it could be confusing.

When reviewing different sellers feedback profile I noticed that many of them received bad reviews on their feedback as people felt that they were tricked into buying the item thinking that it was a real iPod®

Some sellers even noted in their ad that it was not an iPod® but apparently because it looked similar and often came packaged in the same clear case, it was often confused... whether that is because the buyers couldn't read or didn't take the time to read the whole ad... work, kids, and life in general competing for their time, they would receive it and soon realize that it was not an iPod®

This apparently made some very angry... whether the product was inferior or better than the iPod did not matter. They felt tricked and wanted their money back. That was evident from the feedback that many sellers received on eBay® from selling these types of MP4 players.

I myself felt that both products had both negative and positive aspects, and for the price you could purchase on of the unbranded MP4 players, I felt that it was a good prospect to build a business upon. With a little work of course.

The first thing that had to be done was to make sure that no-one would mistakenly purchase my product thinking that it was an iPod®

To do this I had to "Brand" the MP4 player... I was selling the same type of device as all of the other thousands of sellers on ebay, however mine was better in many ways.

1) It was not "Unbranded" (That seems cheap) Since the device looked similar to the iPod nano® but offered more features, one of them being a digital voice recorder, I thought it would be catchy to call my product the Frenzy Spi-Pod.

This is what is looked like in it's packaging.

Personally I think that my packaging was way cooler that Apple's clear case. And by packaging it this way it would ensure that no-one would Accidentally mistake it for the iPod®

2) The user manuals that come with these are HORRIBLE... I purchased the same device from 10 suppliers each with their own User Manual, and it took me FOREVER to figure out how to use the damn thing. So I had to figure out how to use all of the functions and write my own user manual so that my customers would not return it because they couldn't figure it out. To see the manual that I wrote for these click here.

When my product hit the market... eBay® it was an instant success... I was outselling all other sellers and was able to charge higher prices as well.

It became such a good seller that I believe other sellers were jealous and tried to get my auctions cancelled for one reason or another by turning m e into eBay for listing violations.

I received my first violation of offering a "Choice" auction, and all of my auctions were cancelled and I was suspended from any activity for one month.

The sad part about it was that I was in fact following all of their regulations but eBay® has a rule that you cannot contest it for one month, so even though all I was doing was listing ONE ad for my Frenzy Spi-Pod wherein you could choose from five colors after you won, instead of listing an ad for each color (to save on listing fees) I was still unfairly "accused" of violating a policy and punished accordingly.

I had to wait a month before I could protest the charges against me, and since I was in fact following their guidelines I was re-instated.

In the electronics industry where flash prices vary daily (usually dropping in price) the market value of these types of devices dropped. I brushed it off and started selling on eBay® again.

Almost immediately I was suspended for another violation that I was falsely accused of and had to wait another month to contest it... More>>
